Porn star Riko Hoshino announces adjustment disorder
It’s sometimes easy to forget the Japanese porn stars are real people and that they work in a difficult environment.
The adult video star Riko Hoshino announced on June 17 that she has been diagnosed with adjustment disorder and is undergoing treatment.
The 27-year-old Hoshino had planned a release event for her fifth print photo book, To Leo, at two bookstores in Tokyo on the June 6, but these events were postponed due to poor health, and later canceled.
On her X account, she apologized and explained to fans the situation. “I’m so sorry, I’m really sorry. I’m afraid to appear in public anymore. No matter how hard I try, when many people and strangers are looking at me it makes me feel faint, and I get so scared to go somewhere alone that my arms and legs freeze up. I’m really sorry.”
In this post, she revealed: “Around the end of last year, before I took a break from my activities, I was diagnosed with adjustment disorder, accompanied by various symptoms such as panic disorder and depersonalization disorder, and have been undergoing treatment.”
She explained, “I struggled with the conflict between my desire to be sincere as a creator to my work and those who love it, and the time I could realistically dedicate to it. Because I was practicing rhythmic gymnastics every day in my private life, treatment did not progress as I had hoped, and I had to put off undertaking treatment properly.”
Adjustment disorders are not unusual among Japanese celebrities and actors. Kyoko Fukada had a well-publicized spell with one that forced her to take a break for a while, before making a stunning comeback.
Does this mean Hoshino won’t be able to work in JAV anymore?
“From now on, I don’t think you will see me directly at events or venues.” But she promised she would continue to perform in productions. “I intend to continue working as a creative so I can release even better photo books and AV works to the world.”
She also took the opportunity to address a previous incident where she criticized some fans’ posts praising her appearance.
“I’m personally not used to being admired as a woman by strangers who call me cute and beautiful, and I think there were many times when I couldn’t honestly accept everyone’s support.”
“I couldn’t understand the affection that went beyond what’s commonly called fandom, nor the anger when I couldn’t reciprocate it, due to my lack of experience. I’m truly sorry,” she apologized.
“I wished to be loved not just for my natural face and body, but for the quality and sensibility of the work I’ve developed, so from now on I’ll focus on working as a creator (like a director or actor).”
“I hope you will continue to support the works I make in the future.”
Hoshino is a Hokkaido native and former patissier who made her JAV debut in 2022 and has been freelance since April this year. It’s quite possible that her health issues were a factor in her leaving her agency in the spring (and possibly the three-month break from shooting she announced in November last year), but it will be interesting for the industry if her current issues prompt her to move into directing instead of performing, since JAV does not have enough female directors.
