About a year ago, we wrote about SwipeMart, the convenience store set up by dating app Tinder in Shibuya. We included a nice video by Asagi, a dating consultant who specializes in intercultural and interracial relationships. Asagi is herself now married and has a young family with a non-Japanese partner, so you could say that she knows what she's talking about. But she doesn't just give guys advice about how to date Japanese ladies. She also posts other kinds of content, such as this video about an issue that we have frequently covered here on Tokyo Kinky: chikan, or public groping. Though ...

Last week, we reported on the sexual assault that Korean music artist DJ Soda suffered at a music festival in Osaka during a part of her performance on August 13 in which she got close to fans. Since DJ Soda first went public (initially to her five million followers on Instagram) with her distress over the assault, the case has ignited a furore in Japan and elsewhere. Netizens in Japan -- who tend to be male, nationalistic, anti-Korean, and not known for their sympathetic attitude toward women -- have accused her of being anti-Japanese because she claimed it was the first such ...

The popular South Korean musician DJ Soda has accused fans in Japan of groping her during a set at a music festival in Osaka on Sunday. DJ Soda, who is arguably as much a beauty icon as a music one, took to social media to express her shock at what happened. At the end of her set, the 35-year-old also known as Hwang So-hee ran toward the enthusiastic audience behind a fence to greet and dance with them. At other events, this usually means she waves at fans and dances in front of them for a bit, but fans in Osaka took the proximity as an opportunity to touch DJ Soda. Notably, they ...

The growing popularity of Halloween in Japan has resulted in massive street cosplay parties, particularly in areas like Shibuya in Tokyo. That have been adverse effects, too, which is almost inevitable when so many thousands of (mostly young) people come together. Last year, in particular, seemed like a turning point when a truck was turned over in Shibuya by drunken revellers. Some used the street parties as a mere excuse to grope women or take panchira underskirt photos. This year's Halloween in Shibuya was crazily crowded but a little more subdued, with tighter police controls back again ...

There are many ways to get a girl's attention. Just being a gaijin in Japan can be helpful... sometimes -- though sometimes decidedly unhelpful in this regard. But a select few people rather choose to adopt more unusual means in order to get closer to their target. That being said, we reckon this guy takes the prize for most brazen. Back in February, a 26-year-old woman was working as normal at a cosmetics section of a department store in central Tokyo. Now, as anyone who has ever gone to one knows, these sections tend to be on the ground floors of department store and overwhelm ...

Chikan is a chronic problem on public transport in Japan that doesn't seem to be getting better any time soon. Despite the introduction of women-only carriages during rush hour and the display of posters and "shame stickers" warning offenders that groping is a crime, the number of men who do it never seems to decrease. If #MeToo was just about chikan, the number of tweets would likely break Twitter's servers. Kumi Sasaki says she was groped "nearly daily" on her commute to and from school in Japan. She was aged between 12 and 18. Her first experience of chikan was on the crowded JR ...

Being of that kind of mind, the Japan Suspicious Person Information Centre (JASPIC) conducted a seven-month study on "perverts" based on reports from police and municipalities. The Japanese term here is fushinsha, a "suspicious person." This, though, does not refer to spies or would-be thieves, but voyeurs, flashers and chikan (gropers). JASPIC reports that 11,607 incidents were officially recorded from March to October this year, and of these 4,487 -- around 40% -- were in the vicinity of train stations. Naturally, there are a lot of stations in Japan and most of the 4,487 are spread ...

We all know free hugs. But what about free oppai? A Japanese female YouTuber, Pepsi Lu, was offering lucky men in Hachiko at Shibuya Station that chance to grope her breasts in public. She kept her clothes on, but naturally this caused quite a fuss after some 60 people -- including women and foreigners (we love how the Japanese press feels the need to mention this point) -- copped a feel of her bust. Sadly the videos are no longer online (apparently deleted for breaching some rule) but, while there's been no Weinstein-esque fallout in Japan, it's nonetheless causing plenty of ...
