Tokyo police to prosecute trio who asked passersby to grope woman’s breasts in a box

A few years ago, what seemed to be a sexual assault openly taking place on the streets of Shibuya during the Halloween cosplay party turned out to be an adult video production being film guerrilla-style among the actual crowds of bystanders.

Ah, those were the glory days before the pandemic and a crackdown destroyed Halloween in Shibuya, and before new porn legislation imposed stricter rules that have greatly increased production schedules.

Nonetheless, some bold types working in JAV still try their luck with seat-of-the-pants productions and edgy stunts, but the consequences are sometimes severe.

Tokyo Metropolitan Police have referred a woman and two men to prosecutors for obscene behavior breaching a metropolitan ordinance on nuisance prevention. The three had approached people on the streets of Shibuya to ask them to reach inside a cardboard box that the woman was “wearing” around her body. The “game” (a version of a common one played with children) was for randos to guess what was inside just using their hands to identify it. Though we never saw it in the wild, pictures and video images indicate that the outlandish nature of the costume and game always attracted crowds.

You’ve probably guessed it by now. The woman’s breasts were inside, waiting for the passersby to grope them. This was for a social media stunt than an actual adult video, but one of the two men did film the people groping the woman on the street (the second man acted like an interviewer and carnie).

Though police only just announced they were proceeding with prosecution, the trio had actually done the stunt 14 times since February of last year in areas like Shinjuku and Shibuya. During busy periods of the night, such a stunt would probably passed under the radar, but the trio uploaded the videos to social media platforms like TikTok under the account name “Saa-chan inside the box,” accruing 800 million views. The videos show both men and woman, Japanese and foreign, participating in the game.

And this wasn’t just for clout. The clips were intended to promote “Boxgirl” videos available to watch on the subscription-based porn website MyFans, and according to press reports, the group earned about ¥10 million in sales in this way.

Obviously, with this many views (and the connection to amateur porn), it was only a matter of time until the authorities took notice, though it seemingly took them a while to identify the three people involved. Police proudly displayed the confiscated “wearable” box to the news media’s cameras on Monday.

The woman is aged 27 and the men are in their thirties. The woman, unnamed and described only as “unemployed” in media reports, and wearing a face mask in the videos, is apparently an actual porn star called Chiyu. She is also the same woman who appears (masked again) in the MyFans video.

In a way, the “box woman” stunt is the inverse of the Kobo Abe novel and movie The Box Man. There also various regular AVs that feature women trapped in boxes and so on, at the mercy of men’s hands and worse.
