Almost anyone who has watched a fair amount of Japanese porn will have stumbled upon a particular swimming pool, known simply as “that pool” (rei no pool). It is a certain location that for various reasons — not least aesthetic ones — became a go-to choice for porn producers from the 2000s.

The pool was so famous that it got its own tribute book, edited by a “research group” dedicated to the site and published in 2013.

It is, however, not a regular pool but one that is part of a two-floor studio called Hanazono Room in Shinjuku, central Tokyo.

News has recently emerged that the location is now closed to adult video productions, prompting fans to speculate on the end of an era. We saw this story reported last month on R18 Japan, though we cannot confirm this despite searching in Japanese (nor on the Hanazono Room website, which carries a long list of prohibited activities and types of shoots). The only thing we seem to find online is some Twitter speculation from April.

Perhaps these people have access to internal industry sources? For once, we hope the rumors are wrong.

Apparently the studio management are no longer willing to hire the facility to porn productions because of the additional costs such shoots entail, like cleaning and draining out the water each time.
