Japanese college student accused of swindling from man in seventies in romance scam

A 22-year-old Japanese woman has been arrested for allegedly swindling over ¥400,000 from a man in his seventies.

The pair met on a dating app. Kanon Hiroshige is suspected of fostering romantic feelings in the man to induce him to send money, and even staging a ruse to make it appear as though she had died from an illness. The company employee from Yokohama has been arrested on suspicion of fraud.

Between last year, when she was a university student, and this year, she allegedly made false claims to a man in his seventies who was smitten with her. She told the man she needed ¥420,000 for such as things graduate school entrance exam fees.

The man, who had lost his wife three years prior, was looking for a dining companion on the app. In March of last year, he received a reply from Hiroshige, and their relationship deepened.

She would send messages telling him that she loved him.

In August last year, the man received another kind of message: “Sorry, can you send me some money urgently?”

Hiroshige requested 40,000 yen, claiming she needed it for graduate school entrance exam fees. Subsequently, she asked for over 380,000 yen more under pretexts such as “enrollment fees,” and the man reportedly transferred the full amounts on both occasions.

However, the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department believes these claims were entirely fabricated.

Perhaps most outlandishly and egregiously, she reportedly told the man that was hospitalized with cancer since September of last year, and even posed as her own mother to send a message in April: “My daughter Kanon has passed away at the age of 22.”

Suspect Hiroshige has admitted to the charges. “I had no intention of taking the entrance exam for graduate school.”

The police is investigating the case, believing that Hiroshige actually swindled even more money from the money, perhaps as much as ¥2 milllion under such pretexts such as hospitalization expenses.

What would a 22-year-old girl want from a seventy-year-old man, other than a lot of money? Is he so stupid that he didn’t know that?

Ricardo while I agree he was an idiot and a fool let’s not go overboard
Respecting the soul of his dead wife? She’s dead it’s not like he was banging the 22 year old while the wife was alive which is more than one can say about many Japanese husbands
