Smugglers arrested for hiding gold in sex dolls at Narita Airport
When we first heard the story a few days ago, we thought it had to be a joke. But then we saw the pictures and our proverbial jaw hit the table.
While it is now sadly common to see news reports about people trying to smuggle in drugs and other contraband into Japan, the method employed by one Chinese executive to smuggle in gold takes the cake: the 46-year-old resident of Chiba was arrested for attempting to smuggle in 49 kilograms of gold in 38 bars on a cargo flight from Shenzhen to Narita Airport, hidden inside three sex dolls.
The executive and five others have been arrested this week. The smugglers planned for the dolls to be sent from the airport to an apartment in Arakawa ward, Tokyo, and so avoid paying millions of yen in tax.
But the best thing is that the police did their usual thing of showing off the confiscated goods for the news camera, which this time included a doll. (Hey, why not? A Japanese regional airport once put a sex doll on public display.) The news media dutifully picked up the story, but opted not to use the more neutral police phrasing of “life-size doll” and instead state the obvious: the dolls were adult toys.
The smugglers allegedly declared the dolls as mannequins, but then hid the bars of gold inside the metal frame inside the dolls.
