One in three married Japanese men in twenties cheats on partner
The show Secret Mom Garden 3 on streamer Abema presented data on the prevalence of infidelity among married individuals. The studio guests were taken aback by the statistic that one in three Japanese men in their twenties engages in extramarital affairs.
Yoko Kawamura, a counselor specializing in infidelity issues, remarked that, in her experience, the actual figure is likely even higher. (And we are certain it’s even higher when unmarried men and women are considered.)
The data (the source of which was not shared) showed that 21% of married men and 10.2% of married women have engaged in infidelity.
Broken down by age group, the percentages for men and women, respectively, are:
– 33.3% and 15.1% for those in their twenties
– 23.1% and 13.7% for those in their thirties
– 20.5% and 10.8% for those in their forties
– 16.3% and 7.0% for those in their fifties
– 11.9% and 4.5% for those in their sixties
The data suggests that the rate on infidelity decreases with age for both genders.
Married former AKB48 member Minami Minegishi noted, “For men in their twenties, that’s one in three!” This left the married model and actress Chihiro Kondo shocked. Model and mother of three Nozomi Kawasaki noted that women were cheating too.
Comedienne Naomi Matsushima quipped, “At these odds, someone here might be doing it!”. The people in the studio laughed, perhaps out of nerves. “It’s entirely possible!” Matsushima insisted.
When Minegishi for Kawamura’s expert opinion on the data. Kawamura replied, “Based on my own experience, I have the impression that the numbers are even higher.” As Kondo expressed further surprise, Kawamura explained, “Lately, there’s the factor of matching apps. They’ve made it incredibly easy to meet people.”
“After all, they’re meeting up knowing full well that the other person is married,” Matsushima remarked.
“It’s becoming more common for people to lay that out upfront. They meet up with a specific, convenient agenda in mind,” Minegishi noted.
Kawamura explained, “The goal is sexual activity. Many people meet for that express purpose.”
“With apps, you get straight to the point!” Matsushima reacted!
