Go-go dancer Karen Kimijima arrested on drug smuggling charge

The model, dancer, and rapper Karen Kimijima was recently arrested at Naha Airport on suspicion of smuggling synthetic drugs MDMA and ketamine from Thailand.

Reported by Japanese news earlier this month, the arrest actually took place in mid-July.

The 28-year-old had just arrived at the airport in Okinawa from Thailand via Hong Kong.

According to officials, a small quantity of drugs were found in the pocket of a pair of shorts in Kimijima’s suitcase on July 18.

This is not Karen Kimijima’s first run-in with the law over alleged drug use. She was arrested in February 2018 for alleged cocaine use, though the scandal probably did relatively little to damage her career, since her image was already cemented as a party girl in the clubbing and hip-hop scene.

We expect she was selected for a search at customs precisely because of her past drug arrest. The charge is more serious this time, though, so we wonder about the future impact on her.

That said, according to her social media posts, she was released without charge shortly after the Japanese news picked up the story of her arrest (presumably at the end of the 21-day detention period that police can hold a suspect on a single arrest without re-arresting them or pressing charges). This suggests she was able to persuade officials that she had not intended to smuggle the illegal substances into the country.

Best known as a go-go dancer and former member of the Cyberjapan Dancers group, Karen Kimijima once worked as a gravure model (under the name Karen Tsukishima) and has also performed and released music as a rapper. She more recently started to work as a DJ and was set to perform at a music event in Okinawa prior to her arrest at Naha Airport.

As a freelancer, she has to find ways to promote herself and make extra yen. Like many others these days, she has a Fantia (similar to OnlyFans), where she posts pics of herself in lingerie.

Kimijima once did a stunning lesbian-themed shoot with model Lisa M (Lisa Mizuno), who is also these days mostly a DJ.
