Project Morpheus Summer Lesson trailer for TGS shows Sony has eye on sleazy SIM market

Sony has bizarrely chosen to show off its virtual reality headset Project Morpheus with this creepy demo Summer Lesson, to be exhibited at Tokyo Game Show later this month.

Sony, perhaps with an eye on its dismal sales of late, seems to want to attract the otaku dollar, since the demo, in contrast to previous ones that involved such exciting scenarios as a shark cage, is about leering at a loosely-dressed schoolgirl as she hangs around at home.

Here’s the demo, though you’ll have to wait until TGS to test it out.

Directed and produced by Katsuhiro (“Tekken”) Harada — who advertises his own tastes in 2D girls by his choice of t-shirt — the demo has not impressed Engadget at any rate:

“We’re expecting to feel suitably embarrassed and awkward when we get to test it out at TGS 2014 in a few weeks — but we’re also hoping to get a better grasp of why the team decided to go with something that could easily be so misconstrued for a very conspicuous, very early Project Morpheus showcase.”

So if you’re a young boy without a girlfriend, reach for this headset and get a virtual one instead.

I can see this being a huge hit in Japan among a certain demographic if they made it into a full-on commercial SIM game. The only question, then, is whether the spendthrift Akihabara crowd can save Sony from bankruptcy? One thing’s for sure — it won’t help reverse Japan’s declining population any time soon…

Update (September 12th): The Summer Lesson exhibition booth at TGC has been cancelled!
