Man arrested for threatening ex-girlfriend to “pay back” 10 dates

Here’s a cautionary tale just after Valentine’s Day to remind us how wrong things can go.

A 48-year-old life insurance employee was arrested on February 13th by police in Shakujii in Nerima in Tokyo. Yokohama resident Keisuke Munakata is accused of sending threatening notes to a girl he met at a wedding party in 2013.

Munakata and the 27-year-old girl from Nerima dated last year. But when things went wrong, Munakata sent her a note saying “Keep your eyes out. Something might happen to you.” This intimidation apparently continued from from last December to January.

The pair met at a wedding party in September 2013 and went on around ten dates to restaurants and date spots together. But when Munakata was told in early December that she no longer wanted to see him, he was furious.

“Pay me back the 180,000 yen [around $1,700] I’ve spent on dates!” he demanded by phone.

She went to police, who first warned the man to stop with the phone calls and emails.

“I demanded the dating fee back but I didn’t intimidate her,” Munakata has claimed.
