Are companion rental services booming?

For around ¥4,000 an hour you can have a girlfriend or boyfriend. Well, you can have what’s nice about having a partner without the physical stuff, at any rate.

Rental friends have been around for a while in many places and the ones in Japan have often disproportionately been given space by the foreign media. Obviously they are a fringe service for certain types of people who need extra bods at weddings and so on. How much truth is there in the coverage?

Well, the services do exist, that’s for sure, and they are often more innocent (and innovative) than you might think.

We read an interesting interview with a young guy who rents himself out for lunches and coffees for the princely sum of ¥1,000 an hour.

There are many other services, though one particularly booming recent one is Client Services, which has multiple branches and has been getting lots of local attention. It rents out women for everything from cleaning your house to consultation about “things you cannot tell anyone else”, buying tickets for you and even helping you use a computer.

From hostesses to maid cafes, this kind of renting women for timed slots in order to have them indulge your rhetoric is nothing new. Nor is it necessarily “kinky”.

If you’re a single guy but want some advice about shopping for clothes, who else can you turn to? Or perhaps you want to try out that new cafe in your area but don’t want to go there alone? Other examples of when clients might need a companion include doing some sightseeing, going to an art gallery, or talking about family trouble to a sympathetic female ear.

Client Services charges ¥5,980 for the first hour, and then ¥2,980 after that, and its dispatched ladies can be hired any time of the day. And no, there are no “extras”.

Saying that, the girls look super hot.

What do you think? Are these kinds of services worthwhile if you can’t take the lady to bed at the end of the shopping trip?
